The brief

Where they started, and why.

A St. Louis electrical design and subcontracting firm, in business since 1992 and the market leader offline, with an online presence that did not reflect it. Named client withheld.

The situation

Thirty years in business, top-ranked in the St. Louis metro, and effectively invisible in search. The practice is a familiar one for established trades: a reputation built entirely through referral and repeat work, and a domain that never had to earn anything because the phone rang anyway. At DR 39 with around 1,000 monthly organic visitors, they were losing the searches to competitors with a fraction of their track record — the ones who had simply been building links while they had not.

Our approach

Cadence over campaigns. Rather than a burst of placements, the programme committed to 8–10 vetted links every month for two years, on domains between DA 50 and DA 90, split between industry-relevant publications and local sources. For a local service business this pace matters more than peak authority: a steady, mixed profile built over 24 months looks like a business earning coverage, which is exactly what it was.

The work

What we actually did.

01

A fixed monthly rate, held for two years

8–10 quality placements per month, every month, for 24 months. The 214 links built work out to just under 9 a month — the cadence held almost exactly as planned, which is the whole point: consistency is what separates a profile that compounds from one that spikes and stalls.

02

Industry authority alongside home-improvement reach

Placements ran across trade and consumer property titles — Bob Vila (DR 85), Today's Homeowner (DR 80), Homebase (DR 78) and Foursquare (DR 91). Home-improvement publications matter here because they reach homeowners at the moment they are deciding whether a job needs an electrician.

03

Local citations underneath the authority work

Local citation building ran throughout, aimed at the St. Louis service area. National authority raises the domain; local signals are what put it in front of somebody searching for an electrician nearby. Neither does the job alone for a business that only sells within a radius.

The outcome

Two years of steady building, and a domain that finally matches the business.

Monthly organic traffic grew from roughly 1,000 to more than 27,500 over 24 months — a 2,650% increase, and one the client has continued to hold rather than give back. Domain Rating rose from 39 to 50, an 11-point gain built from 214 placements averaging DA 50+. The client reports a corresponding rise in qualified lead generation, which for a subcontractor is the only metric that ultimately counts.
