Where they started, and why.
A Malta-based social media management platform, three years old, trying to break into a niche where competitors already held the top positions for every commercial term. Named client withheld.
The client builds a social media management tool — reach, likes, views, the metrics its own customers are judged on. They came to us in October 2021 with the problem every three-year-old product in a mature category has: the commercial search terms were already taken. Competitors had held the top positions long enough to accumulate the links that keep them there, and at DR 47 against that field, more content was not going to change the outcome. Organic traffic sat at roughly 12,300 a month across 3,599 ranking keywords, most of them too far down to matter.
We started with the competitors rather than the client — mapping what was actually holding their positions, so the target list was built against the gap instead of against a DR filter. The brief was never to add links; it was to add the specific authority the category rewards. That meant social media and technology publications with genuine standing, accepted slowly over three years rather than bought in a quarter.
What we actually did.
Competitor-gap analysis before any outreach
The first work was an audit of the site and of the profiles keeping competitors in the top positions. That produced a target list defined by what the client was missing rather than by what was available, which is the difference between a link profile that closes a gap and one that simply grows.
High-authority placements in social and tech
Placements landed on properties like Woostify (DR 87), MailMunch (DR 78), CIENCE (DR 75) and Deskera (DR 73) — publications whose readers are the marketers and operators the tool is sold to. The links built averaged DR 77, the highest average of any campaign in this collection.
Compounding over three years, not a burst
188 placements across 35 months is a deliberate rate. A young domain that acquires links faster than it earns standing looks exactly like a domain that bought them, so the profile was built at a pace the site could carry — which is why the keyword base grew alongside the authority rather than after it.
Publications that carried them.

A 19-point DR gain, and a keyword base six times larger.
Monthly organic traffic rose from 12,315 to 102,041 unique visitors over 35 months — a 275% increase. Domain Rating moved from 47 to 66, a 19-point gain that is the largest authority movement in this collection and the reason the rest of the numbers followed. Ranking keywords grew from 3,599 to 23,064 — an expansion of more than six times, which is the figure that matters most here: it means the client is now competing across the whole category rather than for a handful of terms. The campaign is ongoing.
